TUESDAY’S STORMS LEAVE TRAIL OF DAMAGE IN SOUTHERN ILLINOIS, TWO TORNADOES REPORTED

Tuesday's storms brought major damage to the southern half of Fayette County, with multiple homes, sheds, and power lines hit.

According to the National Weather Service, the damage was not caused by a tornado, but 60 MPH straight-line winds.

There were storm spotters, however, who reported seeing a tornado in Fayette County, but those reports have not been confirmed at this time.

Emergency Management officials in Williamson County continue to assess damage done from Tuesday's severe weather.

Several structures were damaged, but currently there are no reports of injuries or deaths from Tuesday's storms in Illinois.

A twister reportedly touched down near West Frankfort, destroying a home. Another twister was reported near Galatia, and several buildings were damaged in Saline County.

Damage was reported from the north end of Carterville, extending east northeast through Herrin and Energy, and then exiting in through the rural area of Williamson County to the east northeast into Saline County.

The Red Cross set up a shelter for those needing a place to stay overnight, and county highway workers were called out clear roadways that were affected.

A few severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings were issued by the National Weather Service Tuesday evening.

150 Acres Burn in Two Large Grass, Field and Woods Fires

Two large fires that spread out of control from controlled burns kept firefighters from Kinmundy-Alma, Iuka, and Xenia busy on Wednesday.

Kinmundy-Alma Fire Chief Kevin Day says 120 acres burned on the Jack Rose property at 7653 Bilek Road in rural Alma after a controlled burn of CRP acreage got away and burned a wooded area, CRP ground not scheduled to be burned as well as cornfields. Day reports no buildings were ever endangered by the fire. The fire call came in at 10:30 Wednesday morning. Firemen were on the scene for about two hours. They returned for a rekindle later in the afternoon.

Iuka Fire Chief Kenny Eagan reports 30 acres of land burned off the Underpass Road east of Iuka near the Clay County line after a controlled burn of brush got out of control and spread into set aside land and woods. Eagan says the most difficult part of fighting the fire was getting to it. The ground was so muddy only jeeps could be used. An old mobile home that had been scrapped in the woods was destroyed, but no other buildings were endangered. Xenia Firemen were called for mutual aide assistance. The Fire Call came in at 1:45 Wednesday afternoon. Firemen were on the scene for about 90 minutes.

Salem Firemen were called to the Nancy Alexander property at 4025 State Route 161 when a small grass fire broke out. There was no damage reported.

Kinmundy-Alma Firemen also handled a small woods fire Wednesday afternoon at 305 North Monroe. No damage was reported.

Gunman shoots man during Catholic Mass in Utah

Police have arrested a man accused of walking into a Catholic church and shooting a man in the back of the head during Mass on Sunday in Ogden.

Investigators say 35-year-old Charles Richard Jennings Jr. was captured Sunday afternoon in nearby Box Elder County after fleeing in a stolen pickup truck.

Witnesses say they heard one gunshot during the 11:30 a.m. Mass at Saint James the Just Catholic Church, and that parishioners immediately hit the floor.

While police haven’t disclosed the relationship between the two, parishioners say the victim was the gunman’s father-in-law and there had been problems between the suspect and his wife.

(CNN) — A line drive struck Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Alex Cobb flush in the head Saturday afternoon, sending him sprawling to the ground and eventually to a Florida hospital.

The incident occurred during the fifth inning of the Rays’ home game with the Kansas City Royals at Tropicana Field. Video shows Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer hitting a pitch right back up the middle — hitting Cobb on the right ear, Tampa Bay explained in a tweet.

The 25-year-old Cobb immediately clutched his head and fell to the ground as the ball careened back to Rays catcher Jose Lobaton, who proceeded to throw Hosmer out at first base.

Cobb was later taken off the field on a stretcher and taken to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg.

“He remained conscious the entire time,” the Tampa Bay franchise said on Twitter.

A few hours later — after the Rays wrapped up a 5-3 win — the team tweeted about Cobb’s condition.

“Alex Cobb was diagnosed with a mild concussion,” the club said. “All tests came back normal.”

According to the Rays’ website, Cobb — a righthander in his third season in the majors — has a 2.95 ERA in 12 starts this year. He’s notched 73 strikeouts, versus 20 walks, and held opposing batters to a .233 average.
