Two large fires that spread out of control from controlled burns kept firefighters from Kinmundy-Alma, Iuka, and Xenia busy on Wednesday.
Kinmundy-Alma Fire Chief Kevin Day says 120 acres burned on the Jack Rose property at 7653 Bilek Road in rural Alma after a controlled burn of CRP acreage got away and burned a wooded area, CRP ground not scheduled to be burned as well as cornfields. Day reports no buildings were ever endangered by the fire. The fire call came in at 10:30 Wednesday morning. Firemen were on the scene for about two hours. They returned for a rekindle later in the afternoon.
Iuka Fire Chief Kenny Eagan reports 30 acres of land burned off the Underpass Road east of Iuka near the Clay County line after a controlled burn of brush got out of control and spread into set aside land and woods. Eagan says the most difficult part of fighting the fire was getting to it. The ground was so muddy only jeeps could be used. An old mobile home that had been scrapped in the woods was destroyed, but no other buildings were endangered. Xenia Firemen were called for mutual aide assistance. The Fire Call came in at 1:45 Wednesday afternoon. Firemen were on the scene for about 90 minutes.
Salem Firemen were called to the Nancy Alexander property at 4025 State Route 161 when a small grass fire broke out. There was no damage reported.
Kinmundy-Alma Firemen also handled a small woods fire Wednesday afternoon at 305 North Monroe. No damage was reported.
