Most Government Offices, Schools, and Financial Institutions Closed; Veterans Day Programs Set in Centralia and Patoka
Most local, state, and federal offices are closed Friday for Veterans Day. That includes Salem and Centralia City Halls, area courthouses, and drivers license facilities. However, trash pickup will be on the regular Friday schedule. Most schools and financial institutions are also closed. There will be no home mail delivery.
A Veterans Day program is scheduled for 10:30 Friday morning at the Centralia VFW Hall. A Veterans Day Dinner and program will be held Friday night at the Patoka American Legion Hall. Dinner begins at six pm. The program follows at seven. All members and families are invited to attend.
The observance of Veterans Day started 93 years ago when World War One officially ended with a treaty. The actual fighting ended seven months earlier when an "armistice" between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. It became a legal holiday in 1938 but wasn't recognized as "veterans" day until 1954. Most local, state, and federal offices are closed today. http://goo.gl/cTsA1
